Google Drive is an innovative solution to the limitation of the regular physical storage devices. You might have had encounters with these devices. How they can be corrupted or damaged and all you files gone. Just like that! It can be disheartening, but thankfully with cloud storage, you don’t have to worry much about things like that.

Google Drive has many powerful and useful features onboard. More than that is its ability to integrate with the many Google apps that make up the Google ecosystem. One of those features that it has that make life convenient is its sharing features. You don’t need to start a transfer process to move files to another account, especially large files which are time consuming to transfer. Just simply grant the person access to the file and you’re done.

However, you may not want to have owner’s access to a file anymore. The reason can be anything, and Google Drive makes it possible for you to transfer ownership of a file to another Google account. In this guide, we are going to take you through that:

How to Transfer Ownership of File to Another Person on Google Drive

Google Drive lets you share file easily and it is designed in a way that you can specify the level of access to the file. Anytime you create or upload a file on Google Drive, you are recognised as the owner of the file. But you can also transfer ownership to someone else. We are going to teach you how to do that in this post.

Something to note: Once you make someone the owner of a file, all privileges are given to the person and you won’t be be able to revoke that change. It is even possible for the new owner to remove you as the owner entirely. You also cannot delete or share the file with someone else

You can change ownership for different files that Google Drive works with: Google Forms, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google My Maps, Google Drawings.

Change Ownership of Google Drive File

First you’ll need to share whatever file you want to change ownership for with the person you are transferring it to.

We’ll be using Google Docs as an example, but the process works the same for other type of files:

1. Go to the Google Drive homepage and locate the file whose ownership you want transferred.

2. Right-click on the said file and select “Share”. Add an email address if you haven’t shared a file with anyone else before.
