How to Convert Rows to Columns on Google Sheets

There’s no better way of entering data and manipulating them than using a spreadsheet. A spreadsheet makes it easy to work with data and one great tool for doing this is Google Sheets. Just like Microsoft Excel, the online tool enables you to display data in a row and column format and also use bars and charts to represent data. One great things about it is that it works online so you can sync to all your devices.

Working with rows and columns is quite easy with Google Sheet and one notable feature of it is the ability to convert rows to columns. In this article, we guide you on how to do just that.

Converting Rows into Columns

To know how things will look after converting rows into columns, take a look at the table below:

The table now has A1, B1, C1, D1 in the position of A1, A2, A3, and A4. This also reflects on the whole table.

Here’s how to do this:

1. Left-click on the entire table to select it and use your mouse to drag across the entire table. You can also do this with your keyboard by using the Shift and arrow keys to select the cells.

Converting Rows into Columns by via Functions

Functions are also a part of Google Sheets. They are composed of codes that help you to manipulate your table and data on it. Using functions offers a more easy way of converting table rather than pasting them.

You’ll have to employ the function – Transpose to perform this on Google Sheets. Follow the steps below to use the function:

1. Use your mouse to double-click on the field where you want your new table to start.

2. On that field, type “=” and and “TRANSPOSE”. Google Sheets will then give you a guide on how it is used and how it works.

3. Now, select the fields you want to transpose in its brackets and differentiate them with “:”. Press Enter. Then enter the following syntax into the empty field: = TRANPOSE(A1:D1).

Once you hit Enter, you will find that only one row was converted. The reason for this is that the TRANSPOSE function only responds to one argument. To do it for other rows, you’ll need to do the steps above for each row.
