They are software that are free for personal use.
They are software that can be downloaded, used and copied without any restriction provided it is for personal use.
Developer retains rights to software and the source code is not available to the public, thus cannot be modified.
Some freeware might have limited functionalities from the main (commercial) software, some functions might be disabled.
Examples include Potplayer, iTunes, Microsoft Internet Explorer

DISADVANTAGES
