How to Sum a Column in Google Sheets

The world of spreadsheets have come a long way. From the earlier days of Microsoft Excel to the present days where there are many cloud solutions. One of them is the popular Google Sheets. The spreadsheet platform is from the robust Google Docs suite of apps that contain Docs, and Slides.

Google Sheets is a solid spreadsheet app and is quite easy to use. While using Google Sheets, you will need to sum up values. There’s a faster way to do it on the app instead of doing it manually, and that is through the SUM function. In this guide, we explore the SUM function and how to use it:

The SUM Formula in Google Sheets

Formulas are used in Google Sheets to make mathematical computations. The formulas in Google Sheets range from simple to complex, and there can be more than one formula for doing an arithmetic.

The SUM formula is a simple formula you can use to add up the values in a column.

If you have a column of seven numbers that you want to sum from cell B1 to B7, you’ll have to input the formula below:

=SUM (B1:V7)

First, you must always include the = sign which shows that you are about to enter a function.

There are various types of functions in Google Sheets, but the one we are using now is the SUM function.

After the SUM function is the brackets which has the column letter and cell number included in it. This tells Sheets the range of values to sum.

The formula should be typed in a cell where you want the results to be. After inputting the formula, hit Enter and you will see the result.

If want to add an entire column because you may input more value to that column in the future, simply use the formula below:

=SUM (B:B)

The letter can be different depending on the column you wish to add.

How to Sum a Column in Google Sheets on Desktop

You can use Google Sheets on Windows, Mac or Linux via your web browser and from there sum all the values.

1. Open your preferred browser and open Google Sheets https://sheets.google.com . You can choose your preferred file or open a blank file.

2. Input the values you want inside the cells you want them to be.

You can also sum different columns by clicking on the first cell and dragging the rectangle to select all desired cells.

3. Now, enter the formula and the column you want to add up.

4. After that, hit “Enter”.

Another Method

You can use another method to add cells on desktop. Here’s how:

1. Go to the task bar at the top. You’ll see the ∑ sign there. Click on it and select the SUM formula from the drop-down menu.

2. Enter the range of cells you wish to sum.

3. Next, hit Enter.

How to Sum a Column in Google Sheets on Mobile

You can also use your Android or iOS device to access Google Sheets and sum values. Here’s how to do it:

1. Launch Google Sheets on your Android device.

2. Open a new spreadsheet or open an existing one.

3. Input the data you want to sum into the cells and select the cells that have the values.

4. You’ll then see different option for calculation: SUM, Minimum, Maximum, and more.

5. Select SUM, and then hold and drag the function to your preferred cell.

1 Select SUM; Source: About Device

6. Once you release the function, you will see your result.

2 Result will be displayed; Source: About Device

You can also input the formula manually, if you don’t want to do any dragging.

1. First, tap the formula field at the bottom, and type in the function.

3 Type in the function; Source: About Device

2. Next, select the cells you want to add to the formula. As you tap on them, they will be added to the formula automatically.

4 Select each cell; Source: About Device

3. When you’re done, tap the checkmark and the result will be displayed.

Rounding Up….

Google Sheets had many formulas and functions to make working with figured easy. One of the basic ones is the SUM function. The SUM function is not only easy to use but it offers flexibility when using it to sum values. We hope you found this helpful… If you did, kindly leave a comment and don’t forget to share…
